Radiation Safety Officer
About 172 hours a year as the Radiation Safety Officer for the Eastern Oklahoma VA, on site at VA facilities in Tulsa and Muskogee.
Part-time radiation safety support for the Eastern Oklahoma VA Health Care System, about 172 hours a year. You will be the Radiation Safety Officer for all three sites: the Jack C. Montgomery VA Medical Center in Muskogee, and the James Mountain Inhofe VA Medical Center and Ernest Childers VA Outpatient Clinic in Tulsa. Nuclear medicine (two cameras and one hot lab) is in Muskogee only. A separate physicist does equipment testing, and no nuclear medicine studies are done on nights or weekends, so after-hours calls should be rare.
What you will do
- Serve as Radiation Safety Officer for all three sites and chair the quarterly Radiation Safety Committee.
- Do quarterly audits and hot lab dose calibrations (one hot lab, in Muskogee).
- Monitor staff radiation badges and train staff whose exposure is above limits.
- Oversee fluoroscopy training and CT, MRI, mammography and nuclear medicine safety checks.
- Review physicist reports and make sure equipment is rechecked after major repairs.
- Investigate high patient dose events and radiation incidents, and make the required reports.
- Attend radiation safety inspections and report quarterly audit findings within one week.
What you need
- At least 2 years as a Radiation Safety Officer at a facility of similar size and complexity.
- Meet the Radiation Safety Officer qualifications in 10 CFR 35.2.
- Able to be listed on the VA radioactive materials permit.
- Able to be on site within 2 hours of a call, including nights and weekends.
- Able to pass a VA background check and fingerprinting, and wear a VA ID badge on site.
Schedule and location
- Schedule: part time, about 172 hours a year on site (156 hours of Radiation Safety Officer work plus 16 hours of quarterly audits and dose calibration), with on-site response within 2 hours of a call, including nights and weekends.
- Start: estimated December 1, 2026, for one year, with up to four more yearly renewals.
- Where: on site at the Jack C. Montgomery VA Medical Center, Muskogee, OK, and the James Mountain Inhofe VA Medical Center and Ernest Childers VA Outpatient Clinic, Tulsa, OK. No remote work.
- Type: part-time.
